Fashion Speak 101-Mercerised Cotton

You may have never heard of this even though we know many of our readers are golfers, sock wearers and towel users;)

Mercerisation is the treatment of cotton with sodium hydroxide that gives the fabric a lustrous and shiny appearance. When treated, the cotton becomes stronger, smoother, and the dye takes more readily, resulting in a richer color.

Because the cotton is preshrunk, consumers can be more confident about the fit of mercerized garments. This is why it is so great for golf shirts! No one wants to wear a crop top on the green;)

Also, since this treated cotton absorbs more water, the use of the fabric for towels and socks is pure genius. Just make sure you wash cold and lie flat to dry. We’d hate for this situation to occur…
