I managed to sneak out of the house on sunday, briefly, between baby feedings while my belle-mere stayed home with the kiddos. My intentions were to get a quick grocery-run done, and perhaps grab a latte and amazing croissant a la brulerie st roch on the corner of rue saint-joseph est and …something…., but as I was walking there I suddenly found myself out of the cold and inside this perfectly sized, sophisticated yet modest boutique by the name of NOVO, scoping out their winter sale: 50% off of EVERYTHING. The woman working was this dark haired, bohemian-chic, petite-framed francaise(from france). I could tell immediately by her thick french-french accent that she wasn’t from these parts. I ended up standing there in my fur-lined down jacket talking to her for a good 40 minutes about where we both were from, our thoughts on Quebec, being mothers, yadayada(I was actually sweating under all of my winter wear by the time I left). She was super sweet and extremely patient with my delicate french skills. She explained to me that everything they carry is quebecois designed and made, which I love. Support your local everything! And, Tawny and I both have a bit of a sweater fetish, so when I found myself walking out with this cozy-yet-sexy, kitten-grey knit by Eve Gravel at 50% off, I didn’t feel the least bit guilty. ANNDDD, I actually did myself a service by using my cafe time shopping: the buttery-sweet croissant calories, although they taste ohhhh so good, will do nothing for me getting my post-baby body back into its pre-baby jeans;)

Have you ever woken up one morning and not recognized your life? Or perhaps just realized it had been months since you had done something, ANYTHING, for yourself? Or found that something that once defined you has no longer been? I think we all find ourselves at a loss (or just lost) from time to time. Life has ways of distracting us, redirecting us, shifting the focus. But the thing about being passionate about something is that no matter the distraction, or the length of time that we find ourselves off track, we can rest assured that we will find our way back. Sometimes it’s on our own accord, and sometimes it’s with the help of a friend, but it is never by chance. When you are passionate, it is that passion that drives you. Without it we won’t get very far.

We knew it had been a while since we had posted. This summer somehow flew by and our crazy lives got the best of us.. and now we are well into fall and feeling the changes in the air. We have definitely been feeling a bit more motivation these past few weeks. Maybe it’s the transition into quite possibly the best fashion season of all, or for me personally, perhaps the last surge of adrenaline I am getting as I await the arrival of my second child (eta: less than 2 weeks…). Whatever it is, we’ll take it.

These images were shared with us recently by our friends up north in Montreal at Agence KA; an agency representing exclusively Quebecois designers. This is part of the fall-winter 2011/2012 collection of Annie 50. We loved everything about this shoot; the amazing setting on an antique train, the model’s bright red lips and hair, the lighting choice of the photographer, and of course most importantly the color and classic lines of the clothing itself. This line showcases the perfect balance of femininity and masculinity. It’s a sexy, soft, yet bold collection that we just had to share with you all.

Sunday marked Smith Street’s annual Bastille Day celebration where hundreds flock to the french “quadrant” of the borough of Brooklyn to play petanque and eat and drink in celebration of France’s independence, something that relates to hardly any of us

Night was a wonderful time in Brooklyn in the 1930′s. Air conditioning was unknown except in movie houses, and so was television. There was nothing to keep one in the house. Furthermore, few people owned automobiles, so there was nothing to carry one away. That left the streets and the stoops. The very fullness served as an inhibition to crime.

Wooohoo! Summer is here. Time to put away the wool and bring out the linen. When showing off some leg does us all a lil good since we have been hibernating under our tights for 5 months. But wait a minute…a lil leg.

There appears to be a misnomer that women should bare it all to get the attention of male suiters in the summatime. Ok, that’s fine. But there seems to be a contingent of women (and no, not necessarily young) that go balls to the walls and are way too scantily clad, regardless of their body type. I have seen women with bodies to die for whose shorts are just too short to be wearing with a crop top, i.e. above Ashley Greene. I mean, she’s gorgeous, but regardless, short+short=fail. We see women with large breasts, who are putting it all out there in a halter top, with a mini skirt ta boot. Young, pear shaped ladies, sporting body hugging dresses that fall just a wee bit too short.

The point is to stay cool, all while looking savvy. Sure, you can wear your “wife beaters” with a pair of cut off short shorts, but know the appropriate time: at the beach, by the pool, riding your bike, or gardening for the afternoon. I can not speak for everyone, but I don’t wanna see your inner most thigh region at 8:37 am. Where are you going? Work? Hustler Club? We aren’t quite sure, but thought maybe these images could help…

doing shorts and tanks-the RIGHT way

why this works:

we’re getting the laid-back summer-skin-show, without bearing it all.. a light cotton cardigan gives us a delicate curtain to peer through.

why this works:

the shorts are short, but just loose enough, falling at her hips and the cuff gives a cleaner look than a ripped edge.

the tank is perfect on her, loose and yet not frumpy at all. falling at the hip, it creeps up slightly at the belly area to show just enough skin when waving down a cab(or to that cute guy across the street;)

why this works:

as much as we are not fans of EVERYTHING Miley Cyrus does, we do love this look.

she has the beater/black bra down perfectly… by not exposing her chest or midriff, and pairing it with a very loose fitting pair of pale tan linen shorts, she tones down any of the potential ‘stripper’ connotations one might want to make on this look. It says easy-breezy-summer-sexy beautifully.

please note that all of the above are wearing FLAT shoes. never ever be caught in heels and jean shorts above the mid-thigh region, that is unless you do in-fact work at the hustler club.
